Sheikh Mohammed stresses: Decision to reopen airports in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah is a positive message from the government to KRG

The Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives Aram Sheikh Mohammed received today at his office the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq Mr. Jan Kubiš. At the beginning of the meeting, they reviewed the political and security developments and the efforts of the international community to help the Iraqi people. The reopening of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports by the federal government has a great impact on the economy of the region, considering that it is a positive message from the center to Kurdistan and a good step towards solving the accumulated problems such as the salaries and other outstanding issues between Baghdad and Erbil. Sheikh Mohammed also paid tribute to the efforts of the Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and his constant engagement with all parties to address the issues and end the problems.
On his part, Mr. Kubiš expressed his gratitude and thanks to the Deputy Speaker for his ongoing efforts in the legislative institution and the political arena and the issue of convergence of views between the region and the center, especially the issue of salaries of employees of Kurdistan and the provincial elections law in Kirkuk, and normalization of the situation in the district of Tuzkurmatu and return of normal life there. Kubic said that the UN mission is always working to stimulate Prime Minister Haider Abadi to end the problems between the region and the center and overcome the obstacles, and its keenness to continue support for the success of the upcoming parliamentary elections and providing advice and communicate with the institutions involved in the election.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides stressed the need for joint cooperation between the United Nations and the legislative establishment in creating the appropriate atmosphere for holding the elections and allowing the voters to express their desire to consolidate the democratic foundations in the country.
