COR holds session to decide on the date of elections

In its 5th plenary session of the second legislative term-fourth legislative year held on Thursday January 18, 2018, the COR held session to decide on the date of elections.
The session was chaired by H.E the Speaker Dr. Saleem al-Jubouri and attended by 260 MPs.
At the outset of the session, the Speaker thanked the Legal Committee for its continuous efforts to finalize the final draft of the Law of the Council of Representatives.
The Council voted by a majority of 149 MPs against 260 to approve a parliamentary petition submitted by 148 MPs who voted to hold secret ballot over whether to delay the elections or not.
After the secret ballot, the request to postpone the elections won the votes of only 123 lawmakers and did not achieve the quorum of half plus one.
The Speaker Saleem al-Jubouri adjourned the session to Saturday in order to carry out an open ballot for May 12 date set by the government and the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).
The session was then adjourned to next Saturday 20/1/2018.
